Outreach/Mentoring

Dr. Kim is active in mentoring undergraduate and high school students in various research activities. Most of these students do not have any previous research experiences. Over the last 5.5 years, he has mentored more than 57 undergraduate (UG) or high school students (32 minorities), and most of them were awarded FAU UG Research Grants and Summer UG Research Fellowship (SURF) grants, more than $31,640 of research funding specifically for 17 OURI, 4 SURF, 1 WAVE grants.

With FAU UG, he has published 7 journal papers, 1 peer-reviewed proceeding, 9 international conference presentations, and 16 FAU symposium presentations during 2015-2019. A total of 20 students completed their directed independent study, and 22 students performed an internship at Dr. Kim’s laboratory.

Dr. Kim received the 2018 Distinguished Mentor of the Year award from FAU. This university-wide award is given to one faculty each year who serves as a model mentor to his/her UG students regardless of the rank. He also received the 2019 Excellence in Teaching award from the College of Engineering as recognition of his teaching efforts. In October 2019, he received a 2019 faculty Talon leadership award, designed to recognize faculty who have a demonstrated record of exceptional leadership, commitment, and service to FAU students.
